my life as it is

spring break medley

I’ve been waiting for this week since President’s Day.  I always dread the last few days before school breaks.  Last week turned really ugly with two papers, a midterm, and an in-class essay, not to mention mandatory readings.  And I didn’t even procrastinate!  I would have already completed at least half of the assignment the night before.  The quantity of unfinished work probably made me panic, so I started skipping stuff to study.  But it’s all over now and that’s all that matters.

I really needed this break.  Getting sick of Cal.  Literally.  I caught a terrible cold a couple of weeks ago and could barely talk in the morning.  I hate it when that happens.

I messed up twice already with my no-desserts campaign, thanks to forgetfulness.  I swear, I have a very good memory!  Don’t try anything stupid with me.  Anyway, I ate a Starburst, and a few days later, a crème brûlée.  I guess that’s +2 from Easter.  By the way, if you live in/near San Jose and haven’t been to McCormick & Schmick’s, you have to go!  That’s where I ate the custard.  It’s pricey, but the food is bomb.

Mmm.

Mmm.  You know you want it.

Recently, I’ve been seeing a lot of short hair.  I thought it was about time to pay the stylist a visit.  So now, a chunk of my hair is gone.  No more dead hair cells!  But bangs can get really irritating at times.

A little bird told me that the UC waiting game is over.  Seniors: Congratulations!

And now back to reading.

They could’ve waited till spring break, but no.  It’s happened at least three times this week.  Usually lasts from 9:30 AM to 2 PM, if not longer.  And it goes off every minute.  I’m actually grateful for going to my 8 AM class for once.  I hope today marks the end of this irritating ordeal.

More than two weeks into Lent and I haven’t messed up!  I gave up desserts (no chocolate, apple pies, cupcakes, etc.), just like last year.  And on Fridays, no meat.  It isn’t really that difficult if the food isn’t too bad.  I think the quality of the taste is more of an issue cause dorm food is typically bland.

Around 5 PM today, I was approached by two sisters from the Latter Day Saints community on Bowditch and Durant.  I walked down Bowditch and up Channing, listening to them talk about their work and outreach since they kept tagging along.  It was weird because they were dressed in business suits and looked like the type of people who would go partying every weekend.  I mean, imagine Tara Reid talking about God’s plan for you.  In all seriousness, one of them did look like her.  Apparently, they’re trying to reach people who look lost, confused, or sad.  Not sure if I was classified under one of those, but do I look sad when I’m walking on campus?  I remember being confronted with a gang of street kids on campus once and they were all like, “Why you so sad?  It’s a BEAUTIFUL day!”  It was a lot more intimidating though.

To end this on a good note, I was asked by one of my professors to be a reader next year!  Hopefully this will pull through.  It’d be nice to get a job again.  Besides, it’s about time I start giving out the Cs I didn’t deserve.  (; I kid, I kid.

on second thought

You’d think that there couldn’t be anything worse to a bus stop other than the occasional rapid halt causing passenger inertia.

I was on Piedmont and College, heading home.  It was only a bus stop away, but I decided to hop on the 52L cause the construction going on at Boalt is kind of icky.  I was about to get off on Bancroft and College when this police motorcycle rolls up out of nowhere.  He blocks the entry so passengers can’t come in/out and tells the driver that “there is someone on the bus that [he] has to speak to”.  There are five people on the bus, including me.  I don’t know what the other four could have possibly done to warrant an intervention by the authorities, and I was pretty sure I didn’t do anything.

It didn’t occur to me for the longest time that this was my stop.  So one polite inquiry, and I’m off.  The weird part was when my mind sort of “panicked” while I was walking home.  I mean, what if the guy they’re looking for suddenly shoots up the bus or takes a hostage?  Sometimes, when a million thoughts are running through my mind, I lose track of what I should be doing, like paying attention to traffic.  I didn’t bother to observe the pedestrian signals and was starting to cross Durant when I saw a dozen oncoming vehicles at full speed.  And the closest one just had to be a cop car.  It was too obvious.  Good thing she only shook her head at me cause she had to deal with the bus issue.  I swear, it’s the lack of sleep.  I’ve been sleeping around 1 these past couple of days.

I have a portable keyboard I use occasionally since my laptop is small.  Last week, I decided to type up essay quotes on the bed (comfort is important!) and left my laptop on the desk.  I was about 30 minutes into my essay when I got up to check the laptop screen.  Complete rubbish!  All nine lines had some variation of “sdflk,gfgkcv…..mcv dfjgdfncvjdfgiodf ;…lkhjdfl sudxkdjfhaesi”.   So much for being portable.

I didn’t even realize that today was Mardi Gras.  Or the night that Obama gave his speech to the State of the Union.  Or that Lent is tomorrow.  I wanted to give up meat for Lent, but I don’t think that’s going to work very well.  I tried to give up meat this year with my No Meat Mondays project, but it isn’t really working.  More like I keep forgetting.  It is a bit odd for someone to have a pretty good long term memory and forget so much.  I guess possibilities work in many different ways. (:

I think I’ll stick to no sweets/desserts 24/7 and no meat on Fridays until Easter.  I did that last year and failed 4-5 times (due to forgetfulness, surprise surprise), so it won’t be that difficult for me.

In other good news, I saw the tentative Fall 2009 schedule of classes!  Only LS lectures though.  I have half of my schedule planned out already and TeleBEARS isn’t until the middle of April.  (:

Back to midterm review.  I honestly cannot wait until Spring Break is here.  One more month!

First midterm in less than two weeks!  I hate the feeling of how there’s so much to do but there’s not enough time to do it.  The workload is slowly piling up. :(

I hate being in the rain.  Yesterday around 10 AM, I was walking in puddles– well, crunchy puddles for the latter half of the walk.  I hadn’t bothered to look at the ground, so I didn’t realized that it was hailing.  Horrible.

Gospel Choir is having another concert next Saturday (February 21st) in Hertz at 8 PM.  If you’re into four-part harmony and some Jesus lovin’, this is for you.  I’m taking choir for credit this semester.  Surprise, surprise.  (:

I started a little blogroll section off to the side.  If you have a blog, let me know!  I’d love to add you– that is, unless you don’t want to be added…

Back to reading.  I’ll end this with a lyric for closure’s sake.  Props to you if you recognize it.

Good thing I decided not to go anywhere for the weekend.  Hope everything is okay now.  What happened on Shattuck anyway?

I’ve learned something these past two weeks since the semester started.  8 AMs aren’t so bad after all.  Or maybe it’s cause I’ve only had four days.  We’ll see.  I should find some wood to knock on first.

New Year resolutions!  I keep forgetting to write this down.

  • Be a vegetarian once a week.
  • Go to the gym once a week.  I haven’t bought membership yet :|
  • Lose 5 pounds!
  • Learn a language.
  • Study harder!  And go to every class.
  • Get a job.  We’ll see how this one goes…
  • Sleep by 12:30 AM – unless I’m working on a paper.
  • Blog at least once every two weeks.
  • Spend more time with family & friends.

Some of them look far-fetched, but I’m completely serious.  I’m hoping to follow through each one of these bullets.  Actually, I’m thinking about going vegetarian during Lent.  My only concern is that it’s so long and I’m bound to forget one day.  I gave up desserts last year and I failed at least six times – not because I wanted to eat sweets, but because I simply forgot!  Sounds ridiculous coming from someone who has a working long term memory.  February 25 – April 11.  That is kinda long.

To end on a happy note, Andrew got accepted to Riverside!  (:
